Compare and Contrast- reading a novel or watching the story through movie

Novels are now being made into movies. There are many books which have been made into a movie. Most of the famous and interesting books are made into movies and their ratings is high. For example, all of the Harry Potter novels are made into movies and there are many fans that enjoy it. Some people even collect the whole movie series. On the other hand, some still prefer the original version which is the novel version. There are also certain types of people who read the novel and also watch the movie as they really like the story.

The first difference between reading a novel or watching a movie which is being made from the novel is the original story flow. When we read a novel, we will read every single part which means that we knew exactly what is happening in the story whereas in a movie, some parts which are found in the book is not there. This shows that the story is practically incomplete as certain parts of the story are missing. This might be because there is not enough time to show the whole story without cutting some parts. Therefore, this causes the story to lose some of its original story line due to limited time.

In addition, another difference is reading a book makes us to think more and enhance our imagination compared to watching a movie which already has its own flow. When a person reads a book, he or she will be able to think out of the box as they are anticipating the story flow. The reader will also imagine the characters of the book according to their way of thinking but in a movie, the audience has to watch and accept the characters accordingly because the characters are played by specific actors and actresses. This will indirectly set a barrier for the audiences to enhance their imagination hence prevent them from thinking further as in the movies, every position of character and the settings of places are already provided.

Moreover, reading a book helps us to enhance our language compared to watching a movie. This is because when we read a book, we will notice many new words which is something different as it may not be the type of words that we usually use in our daily life. Learning new words increases one’s vocabulary range. Sometimes, a person might not be able to understand the meaning of a word but when he or she read the whole sentence again, they will be able to picture the meaning and soon understand the meaning of the word.

On the other hand, books can be brought everywhere whereas movies is normally much convenient to watch at a big screen. When we are waiting for bus to come at the bus stop, we can flip open the book and began enjoying the story. This shows the convenience of books compared to movies.

REFLECTION FOR WEEK 9

On the ninth week of Writing for Multimedia and the Web class, I was beginning my homepage with my pair. We were finding an interesting topic to advertise in our homepage. We selected several topics and evaluated them. To make our readers interested, we wanted to do a advertisement which can make them enthusiastic to look at our advertisement. Our lecturer briefed us on the homepage. By listening to my lecturer’s explanation, I managed to hold a stronger grip of understanding about this assignment. I realized that this assignment is interesting as it requires creativeness and I also begin to learn how to advertise things. I now knew how to advertise things using the website called Wix.

Advertising skills is an important skill and by doing this assignment, I began to acquire this beneficial skill. As this is skill that can not just be improved through theories, I had to try many new things and then only I learned about them. It was knowledgeable learning new things. On the other hand, we all showed our lecturer our digital storytelling storyboard progress. We explained what our story is about and our lecturer advised and monitored us accordingly. Our lecturer saw our script and told us how to improvise it. We acquired the changes that need to be made on our story and then we adjusted and changed certain parts at our digital storytelling.

In addition, we also listened to lecture. The topic of our lecture for this week was Important Styles for Informative Websites. I learned about the manuals of style for academic, technical and scientific writing. I also increased my understanding on what is front matter, body and also back matter. Besides that, I also managed to enhance my understanding on the technical, academic and scientific style. I understand that scholarly and scientific journal writers employ specific subject –and-audience- driven techniques. I also learned more about jargon.

Moreover, I also managed to gain knowledge about the symbols and equations. I also now knew that we must proofread all symbols and technical terms for errors. I also learned the usage of words, phrases and entire passages in other languages. Last but not least, I learned about constructing online help files and manuals. Help files and manuals are often created as a separate small programs that could be accessed from toolbars. I now knew that online manuals and help files are created for several purposes such as product ownership, use and care. They are also created for policies and procedures.

We should also always provide accurate hyperlinks as an index with wrong page number does not have any function and will not be beneficial for the users. I also learned that we should use user-friendly design. Visitors should not be given too much work. I managed to earn the knowledge about the guidelines when working as a writer. For example, we should always welcome visitors to the site and maintain a respectful tone. We should also keep distractions to the minimum.

REFLECTION FOR WEEK 8

On the eighth week of this course, I listened to a lecture about Important Styles for Commercial Websites. Commercial styles are divided into three parts which are business style, database style and also marketing style. I also viewed some examples of corporate websites. By listening to this lecture, I was able to identify common types of business writing formats. For example, I managed to know what is memorandum, resume, executive summary and proposal.

I was able to enhance my knowledge on the features of business style. I learned that business writing needs to be precise and correct. There is definitely no space for any errors as it will be judged badly by others. In addition, I now knew that business writing is blunt and to the point. Readers will be able to grasp the information faster if they read shorter sentence with active voice sentences. We should also break up long and rambling descriptive phrases and clauses.

I also noticed that it would be better to chunk all information into sections that can be easily moved around. Charts, graphs and diagrams should also be created to make numerical data easier to study. In addition, table should be used to ensure text and graphic are place accordingly at the screen. We should also always prepare the audiences for news which is not good.

Moreover, interesting marketing language should be used. There are many types of marketing languages which exists such as exaggerated claims. In this type of language, the words are all being exaggerated to pull the reader’s attention. Besides that, there is also over-the-top adjectives and adverbs. For example, the words which is being used is flowery words which is not normally used such as the word “zestiest sauce”.
